Tour Overview

A very long day nobody regrets

Tatev is four hours south of Yerevan, which is why most people see it as part of a multi-day trip. If you cannot spare the nights, this is the alternative: a genuinely long day, an early start, and a monastery on a cliff edge that is worth every hour of the drive.

You reach it by the Wings of Tatev — 5.7 km of cable car strung across the Vorotan gorge, the longest reversible aerial tramway in the world, hanging some 320 m above the river at its highest point. The monastery at the far end was a fortified medieval university. On the way back you stop at Old Khndzoresk, an abandoned cave town in a gorge crossed by a swaying footbridge, and at Areni for wine, because you will have earned it.

Your day, hour by hour

Your route, day by day — tap a numbered stop
07:00
Early pick-up in Yerevan
A 07:00 start — this is a long day and the drive south is the price of it. Coffee stop on the way. The road runs down the Ararat plain and then climbs through Vayots Dzor into the mountains of Syunik.
10:00
Shaki Waterfall & the drive south
A stop at Shaki Waterfall, where the river drops over a step of dark volcanic rock into the gorge. Then on through the high country towards Halidzor and the cable car station.
12:00
The Wings of Tatev & the monastery
The cable car crosses the Vorotan gorge in twelve minutes, 320 m above the river at its highest. At the far end, Tatev monastery — 9th century, fortified, and once one of the medieval world’s great centres of learning, with time to walk the complex and lunch nearby.
15:00
Old Khndzoresk & Areni
On the way north, Old Khndzoresk: a whole town dug into the gorge walls and lived in until the 1950s, reached by a swaying suspension footbridge. Then a wine stop in Areni village before the drive back. Expect to be in Yerevan around 20:00.

Availability

Departs the day you choose

Private departures · any dateFrom 2 travellers

We don’t herd you onto someone else’s calendar. Every itinerary on this page runs as a private departure on the dates that suit you — your own guide, your own vehicle, your own pace. Tell us roughly when you’d like to travel and we’ll confirm availability, hotels and a firm price, usually the same day.

Pick your month

Armenia is a genuine four-season destination. The months below show when each part of this route is at its best — but the trip runs year-round, and winter has a quiet beauty of its own.

Who it suits

Travelling solo, as two, or as a family

🧍
Solo travellers

Very comfortable alone. You’re with an Armenian guide the whole way rather than adrift in a crowd, meals are shared and sociable, and we can pair you with another solo traveller to avoid the single supplement where the dates line up.

👫
Couples

This is the trip most couples book. Private vehicle, no fixed group to keep pace with, and enough unscheduled afternoons that you’re not permanently in each other’s itinerary. Say the word and we’ll arrange a quiet anniversary dinner or a room with the Ararat view.

👪
Families

Works well from around age 8, provided your children are happy with a few longer drives and a full day out. We can shorten any day, swap a monastery for a swim in Lake Sevan, or build in a free afternoon — just ask when you book.

👴
Older travellers

Fine for anyone in ordinary good health who is happy on their feet for an hour or so at a time. A few sites involve uneven stone steps and a short climb. Tell us about knees, altitude or anything else and we’ll adjust the route quietly.
