Tour Overview

The whole of Armenia, in one unhurried week

This is the journey we recommend first — the one that leaves nothing essential out. Over seven thoughtfully paced days you travel the length of the country, from the café-lined boulevards and pink-stone cathedrals of Yerevan to the canyon monasteries of the deep south, pausing to taste 6,000-year-old wine culture and to stand quietly beneath the snows of Mount Ararat.

It is a genuine greatest-hits itinerary, but never a rushed one. You’ll see three UNESCO World Heritage sites, ride the world’s longest reversible cable car to the cliff-top monastery of Tatev, cross the swaying gorge bridge at the Khndzoresk cave town, bake lavash over an open fire in a village tonir, taste wine where winemaking itself was born, and watch the light change over Lake Sevan. Each day pairs a headline sight with unhurried time simply to wander, photograph and linger over lunch.

You travel in a small group of no more than eight, by private air-conditioned vehicle, in the company of a licensed, Armenian-born guide who grew up with these stories and personally knows the families, cooks and winemakers you’ll meet along the way. Hotels are hand-picked for comfort and character, every entrance fee and signature experience is already included, and the whole trip can be tailored or run as a private departure whenever you wish.

Your 7-day itinerary

Day 01
Arrival in Yerevan
Your guide meets you on arrival at Zvartnots International Airport and transfers you to your hotel in the heart of Yerevan, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. After check-in and time to rest, set out on a relaxed orientation tour — Republic Square with its singing fountains, elegant Northern Avenue, the Opera House and the sweeping Cascade complex — getting a first feel for the capital’s broad avenues, easy café culture and distinctive character. In the evening, gather for a welcome dinner of traditional Armenian cuisine at a local restaurant.

Day 02
Matenadaran, Ararat Brandy, Echmiadzin & Zvartnots
Begin at the Matenadaran, one of Armenia’s most treasured institutions, home to thousands of priceless ancient and medieval manuscripts. Continue to the historic Ararat Brandy Factory for a guided tour of its ageing cellars — the brandy once poured for Churchill — and a tasting of the spirit that made Armenia famous. In the afternoon drive to Echmiadzin, the spiritual centre of the Armenian Apostolic Church and effectively the Vatican of Armenia, to visit the Mother Cathedral, then the graceful 7th-century ruins of Zvartnots Cathedral — a UNESCO World Heritage site — before returning to Yerevan.

Day 03
Khor Virap, Noravank, Areni, Shaki & Goris
Drive south across the Ararat plain to Khor Virap monastery, dramatically set beneath the twin peaks of Mount Ararat (weather permitting) — the most iconic view in the country. Continue through the wine-growing region of Vayots Dzor to Noravank, glowing against its narrow red-cliff canyon, and the 6,100-year-old Areni-1 cave, the oldest known winery on earth, with lunch at a family-run village restaurant. Further south, pause at Shaki Waterfall, where water tumbles over dark volcanic rock into the gorge below, before arriving in the mountain town of Goris for the night.

Day 04
Khndzoresk Cave Town & the Wings of Tatev
After breakfast, explore Old Khndzoresk, a remarkable settlement built into the rocky slopes of a deep gorge. Cross the swaying suspension bridge that links the two sides of the canyon and wander the remains of cave dwellings, churches and hewn structures that once formed a thriving community. Continue to the Wings of Tatev, the world’s longest reversible cable car, gliding high above the Vorotan Gorge to the fortified medieval monastery of Tatev, once a great religious and educational centre. After exploring the complex, begin the scenic return journey to Yerevan through the mountains of the south.

Day 05
Lake Sevan & Dilijan
Drive up to Lake Sevan, the shimmering “jewel of Armenia” and one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world. Climb the peninsula to Sevanavank monastery for panoramic views across the water and surrounding mountains. Continue to Dilijan, a leafy resort town affectionately called Armenia’s “Little Switzerland”; stroll its restored historic centre before visiting the serene medieval monastery of Haghartsin, hidden among the forested hills. Return to Yerevan in the evening.

Day 06
Garni, Geghard & Lavash Masterclass
Head east of the capital to Garni, the only standing Greco-Roman colonnaded temple in the region, poised above a dramatic gorge. Continue to Geghard, a UNESCO World Heritage monastery partly carved straight into the surrounding cliff, its rock-cut chapels famous for their soaring acoustics. Later, roll up your sleeves for a traditional lavash-making masterclass with a local family — learning how the dough is prepared, stretched and baked against the walls of a blazing tonir — before sharing a meal of the fresh-baked bread and home-cooked Armenian dishes, then returning to Yerevan.

Day 07
Departure
Enjoy a free morning in Yerevan for last-minute shopping, a final walk through the city centre or one more coffee on stylish Northern Avenue. At the arranged time, your guide transfers you to Zvartnots International Airport for your flight home — your journey ending with lasting memories of Armenia’s monasteries, landscapes, cuisine and heritage.
