Tour Overview

Every region, every era, nothing left out

Armenia is small enough to cross in a day and dense enough to spend a month in. Seven days covers the famous places honestly; ten days covers the country. This is the itinerary for travellers who would rather arrive home having understood somewhere than having photographed it.

You travel the full north–south axis. The south gives you the deep canyons — Tatev on its cliff, the cave town of Khndzoresk, the mineral springs of Jermuk and the Silk Road caravanserai on the Selim Pass. The north gives you what most itineraries skip entirely: the forested Debed canyon, the UNESCO monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin, and Gyumri, Armenia’s second city, whose black-tuff streets and stubborn humour survived the 1988 earthquake. In between sit Lake Sevan, Dilijan’s woods, the Areni wine valley and the great sites near the capital.

The pace stays civilised throughout. Nine nights across six different towns means you unpack properly rather than living out of a suitcase, and each long drive is broken by something worth stopping for. You travel by private air-conditioned vehicle with a licensed Armenian guide, in a group capped at eight, with every entrance fee, the Tatev cable car and a series of meals in family homes already included.

Highlights
Five UNESCO World Heritage sites — Echmiadzin, Zvartnots, Geghard, Haghpat & Sanahin
Wings of Tatev, the world’s longest reversible cable car
The Debed canyon and Gyumri — the north most itineraries never reach
Selim Pass caravanserai, a Silk Road inn standing since 1332
Areni-1, the 6,100-year-old winery, and a cellar lunch with the growers
Amberd fortress on the slopes of Mount Aragats, at 2,300 m
Honest fit

Is this trip right for you?

You’ll love it if

  • You have ten days and would rather see one country properly than three in passing
  • The north — Debed, Haghpat, Gyumri — interests you as much as the famous south
  • Six different bases over nine nights sounds like variety rather than upheaval
  • You want five UNESCO sites without ever being part of a coach party

Worth knowing first

  • Three days involve four to five hours in the vehicle, broken by stops
  • You change hotel six times — this is a touring trip, not a base-and-daytrip one
  • Amberd and the Selim Pass are above 2,300 m and can close in early snow

Day 01
Arrival in Yerevan
Your guide meets you at Zvartnots airport and drives you into the city. After settling in, take an easy orientation walk through the centre — Republic Square, Northern Avenue, the Opera and the great limestone staircase of the Cascade — enough to get your bearings and your first sense of a capital built almost entirely from pink tuff. Welcome dinner at a neighbourhood restaurant.

Day 02
Matenadaran, Ararat brandy, Echmiadzin & Zvartnots
Start at the Matenadaran, whose vaults hold some of the oldest Armenian manuscripts in existence. Continue to the Ararat brandy cellars for a tour and tasting, then west to Echmiadzin, seat of the Armenian Apostolic Church since 301 AD, and the ruined 7th-century rotunda of Zvartnots. Two UNESCO sites in an afternoon, and a first real sense of how old this country’s Christianity is.
🏠Overnight in Yerevan
Day 03
Garni, Geghard and a lavash fire
East into the Azat gorge for Garni, the only Greco-Roman colonnaded temple left standing in the former Soviet Union, and the basalt columns of the Symphony of Stones below it. Then Geghard, half-built and half-carved into the cliff, where your guide will find someone to sing for the acoustics. Afternoon in a village kitchen, baking lavash against the wall of a blazing tonir, and eating it.
🏠Overnight in Yerevan
Day 04
Khor Virap, Noravank, Areni & south to Goris
Down onto the Ararat plain to Khor Virap, the monastery that sits directly beneath the mountain — the view every Armenian carries in their head. Then east into Vayots Dzor for Noravank, glowing orange in its narrow canyon, and the Areni-1 cave, where the world’s oldest winery was found. Lunch and a tasting with a local grower before the drive south to the mountain town of Goris.
🏠Overnight in Goris
Day 05
Khndzoresk cave town & the Wings of Tatev
Morning at Old Khndzoresk, a whole town dug into the walls of a gorge and inhabited until the 1950s; you cross the swaying footbridge and walk among the abandoned cave houses. Then the Wings of Tatev, 5.7 km of cable car over the Vorotan gorge, to the fortified monastery that was once one of the medieval world’s great universities. Second night in Goris.
🏠Overnight in Goris
Day 06
Jermuk, Selim Pass & the Silk Road
North through the mountains to Jermuk, a spa town of waterfalls and mineral springs where you can drink the water straight from the pump room. On to the Selim Pass at 2,410 m and the Orbelian caravanserai — a Silk Road inn built in 1332, still roofed, still smelling of cold stone, where merchants and their animals sheltered on the road east. Overnight in Jermuk.
🏠Overnight in Jermuk
Day 07
Lake Sevan, Dilijan & Haghartsin
Over the pass to Lake Sevan, one of the world’s largest high-altitude lakes, and the peninsula monastery of Sevanavank above the water. Continue into the forests of Dilijan — genuinely alpine, entirely unlike the south — and out to Haghartsin, a monastery in a wooded fold of the hills that is at its best in late afternoon light. Night in Dilijan.
🏠Overnight in Dilijan
Day 08
Debed canyon: Sanahin & Haghpat
North again into the Debed canyon, the greenest and least-visited corner of the country. Sanahin and Haghpat, sister monasteries founded in the 10th century, sit on opposite sides of the gorge and together form one UNESCO listing: scriptoria, bell towers, and khachkars carved with a delicacy that still stops people mid-sentence. Overnight in the canyon at Alaverdi.
🏠Overnight in Alaverdi
Day 09
Gyumri & the northwest
West across the highlands to Gyumri, Armenia’s second city. The Kumayri old quarter survived the 1988 earthquake and is being restored street by street: black tuff facades, carved wooden balconies, and a café culture with a distinctly sharper sense of humour than the capital’s. Visit the Dzitoghtsyan museum of local life, then the red-stone church of Marmashen above the Akhurian river. Night in Gyumri.
🏠Overnight in Gyumri
Day 10
Amberd, Saghmosavank & departure
South onto the slopes of Mount Aragats for Amberd, a 7th-century fortress at 2,300 m with nothing above it but the mountain. Then Saghmosavank, poised on the very lip of the Kasagh gorge. A final lunch, then the short drive to Zvartnots airport for your flight home — having crossed the entire country, corner to corner.

Availability

Departs the day you choose

Private departures · any dateFrom 2 travellers

We don’t herd you onto someone else’s calendar. Every itinerary on this page runs as a private departure on the dates that suit you — your own guide, your own vehicle, your own pace. Tell us roughly when you’d like to travel and we’ll confirm availability, hotels and a firm price, usually the same day.

Pick your month

Armenia is a genuine four-season destination. The months below show when each part of this route is at its best — but the trip runs year-round, and winter has a quiet beauty of its own.

Who it suits

Travelling solo, as two, or as a family

🧍
Solo travellers

Very comfortable alone. You’re with an Armenian guide the whole way rather than adrift in a crowd, meals are shared and sociable, and we can pair you with another solo traveller to avoid the single supplement where the dates line up.

👫
Couples

This is the trip most couples book. Private vehicle, no fixed group to keep pace with, and enough unscheduled afternoons that you’re not permanently in each other’s itinerary. Say the word and we’ll arrange a quiet anniversary dinner or a room with the Ararat view.

👪
Families

Works well from around age 10, provided your children are happy with a few longer drives and a full day out. We can shorten any day, swap a monastery for a swim in Lake Sevan, or build in a free afternoon — just ask when you book.

👴
Older travellers

Fine for anyone in ordinary good health who is happy on their feet for an hour or so at a time. A few sites involve uneven stone steps and a short climb. Tell us about knees, altitude or anything else and we’ll adjust the route quietly.
